Scientific Linkage (6_3_12)

Roasted Beet Oh Family. My brother is visiting and upon finding out that I am vegan — yes, have continued outside of my original 3 months and very happy doing so, don’t know how long it will last but it feels right and good… anyway, as we sit down to dinner last night I get every vegetarian and vegan’s favorite question: how do you get your protein? <sigh>

There are three rules to abide by: 1. Never get into a land war in Asia. 2. Never argue with a sicilian when death is on the line. 3. Never argue with a vegan about protein.

I understand that it usually comes from a loving place. As such I make jokes but eventually answer the question. Now perhaps I haven’t mentioned this before but I am the daughter of 2 lawyers. Dinner conversation at the family table is always opinionated and animated. So this opening question kicks off a 2+ hour “conversation” that winds through nutrition, animal cruelty, politics, the effectiveness of boycotts, personal decisions, counter culture movements and finally back to facts and science. I pride myself for staying calm throughout but did take hard stances based on — you know — facts.

We finished dinner with my brother frantically Googling his assertion that he knows “most vegans and vegetarians don’t  get enough protein.” Unsurprisingly (to me anyway) after 45 minutes he didn’t find it. Because there is no such data. There is actually a wealth of data to support the opposite. He tried to back into some NIH guidelines and advisories but nothing that says “most vegans don’t get enough protein.” The data doesn’t exist because it isn’t true.

This is all, of course, a long way of setting up my first link…

If you are getting enough calories you are getting enough protein. Period. End of Argument. Can we move on please? [Read more…]

Sacre Bleu! She is running away…

In FlightYou want to hear something funny? This was supposed to be a travel blog. Like so much of life, it hasn’t progressed quite as originally intentioned.

Enter my trip to my second Tredecem.

I really didn’t ever plan to do another 13.1. I decided after the first that running wasn’t really my thing and would concentrate instead on biking and gym-rattedness. Oh Life, you are funny with your lessons to never say never.

A need for a post-double century “what’s next?” combined with a Delta volunteer bump credit burning a hole in my pocket crashed into my desire just to get away for a while. I have had the driving urge to shake up my routine. Go. Do. See.

So I built up my running miles over the last 6 weeks and off I went to the exotic locale of Madison, WI.

What? I’d never been to the badger state before…

Linkage: Unplugged Weekend Edition

A night for reading This week is going to be relatively light because I have been trying a little “unplugged” experiment since Friday…. Ok, ok — truthfully I finally cracked open and have gotten way into Chris Moore’s new book Sacre Bleu. After finding a new place to get a good cup of joe and read this afternoon, I’m anxious to head to a new pub with hopes to do the same. So in hopes that you find an unplugged way to spend the waning hours of this holiday Sunday or whatever day you find these links, I’ll be brief:

Intentional Enjoyment:

If you do watch one thing from the webs before heading off for fun, make it this animated reenactment of the incredible true story of how Pixar almost lost Toy Story 2 due to 4 keystrokes — and how it was recovered thanks to mommy working. (via @pourmecoffee)

Amazing, lovely old pictures of NYC (yay archives!)

Be the one who says “I’m in.”

Untitled I feel stuck in a rut… so I’m going to jump off a bridge.

Oh wow that sounds a lot more dramatic than it actually is. I’m safe and well, promise. I have no plans to harm myself or others… well except for the jumping off the bridge part — but that isn’t til July!

Let me ‘splain…

If your friends jumped off a bridge…

Don’t call 9-1-1 but this is an emergency post. Just as I did last week, I’m writing on Tuesday with Wednesday deadline looming large. I have about 4 posts 90% “there” but I think they are lacking. My work is missing that little pizzaz to be proud of… cue metaphor for my life.

Lovely Night Linkage

Black IPAI’ve been putting off opening my computer and getting this up all day. It has been a beautifully challenging day from donning riding gear to now and I haven’t wanted to break the spell by engaging in… you know… work.

I enjoy pulling together these links each week, clipping and electronically saving them to share. This week it just seems like labor. Sitting outside, reading ink on paper with a warm cup of coffee has seemed like so much the better idea.  Mayahps it is time for a little techno-sabbatical? We’ll see.

For tonight, from the comfort of my porch with budding stars competing for my attention, I give you…

Power combo with uber Geeky Joy of funness: a story of public radio about civil rights framed in a fight about the taxonomy classification of XMen toys. Oh Radio Lab, thank you.
